Right after our grade school classes, my younger brother and I, would climb the massive walls of the Cathedral and sit on the wide concrete summit, it was sort of our stadium seat, as we watched football players on the soccer field of the local High School Seminary.
One of my older brothers, Jose Marcelino Z. Carpio, went to that school and joined the football team. With sheer dedication, strategy and perseverance he continued his passion for the sport and played at his university. Then, he pursued his dream and became the goalkeeper of the Philippine National Football Team. He was featured in an Asian circulated magazine as one of the greatest football players of the region. Presently, he is contributing to the further development of the sport at the Asian Football Confederation.
Another older brother, Atty. Juan Luis Z. Carpio, is actively promoting the right of our children to play. He is a coach and was the leader of the Naga-Camarines Sur Football Association.
Ultimately an older brother, Juan Felipe Z. Carpio, played for the Varsity Football Team of the University of Santo Tomas where he became its most valuable player.
Soccer is entrenched in The Philippines. Its history began, approximately, 100 years ago when Paulino Alcántara Riestra became the first Filipino and Asian player to play for a European club. He made his debut as a striker at the age of 15 at Barcelona, which made him the club's youngest and second highest goalscorer behind Lionel Messi. Since then, the first football teams began to form, including the Manila Sporting Club in 1906, the Sandow Athletic Club in 1909, and the Bohemian Sporting Club in 1910. (*Wikipedia)
In the recent years, the Azkals—a monicker for the National team—battled at the semifinals in the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup and skyrocketed in the Twittersphere. James and Phil Younghusband, football players, are the brothers who became trailblazers for the emergence of football in The Philippines.
